MERMAIDS - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN & LANDSCAPE BUILD
A residential bungalow located in Fairlight, East Sussex, the small family dwelling required modernisation.
C L took on the project and successfully redesigned an open plan rear extension. The additional space provided a new Kitchen, living room and dining space. Bi folding doors and a large roof lantern maximised the amount of natural light entering into the south facing space. A cosy log burning stove was added into the design creating a warm and attractive central feature to the living space. Overall a scheme that completely changes the way in which the previous bungalow functioned.
Two years after the Extension was successfully designed, the client invited CL back to assess the external spaces leading out from their new building.
The brief included a large patio for dining and entertainment off of the bi folding doors, level changes for interest, planting beds, retained edgings, some form of outdoor Bar, shaded space, an overall aesthetically pleasing, organic terrace that enhances the already, striking contemporary extension.
Cl considered several options with concept sketches, the design developed into a linear scheme, building lines from the extension were used as reference points, and pulled forward to set out a rectangular shaped space.
The main area was paved using a grey Indian sandstone, detailed with a pebble edging, and retained using oak sleepers, the Bar was formed using excess soil from the excavation works, creating an earth rammed wall, capped with an Oak top, Clay pots were inserted randomly to enhance the walls natural organic form and texture.
The upper patio formed the perfect location for a bespoke crafted Oak Pergola, stepping through the centred raised beds, lined with box hedging, onto the Pebble & Slab mosaic patio, high quality cables above, tensioned across the oak beams ready for a Climbing Vine to settle and produce a natural shaded space.
